About Dartmoor in Devon
Dartmoor is known for its beautiful landscapes, wooded valleys and fast flowing rivers. It is a windswept moorland in South Devon with towering granite tors - these are hills topped with rounded outcrops of rock. Dartmoor is also known for its myths and legends, and is reputedly the haunt of pixies and a mysterious pack of 'spectral hounds'. The story of the hounds inspired Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote The Hound of the Baskervilles. There is also the 'Beast of Dartmoor', a supposed big cat. A story that emerged in recent decades is the 'hairy hands', that are said to worry motorists on the B3212 near Two Bridges. Dartmoor has some fascinating historical sights to see, including prehistoric standing stones, stone circles and cairns.
