Holidays in France
France is the most visited country in the world for holidays and leisure travel. Its appeal is the beautiful and changing landscapes and countryside, its easy-going and laid-back lifestyle, and its rich cultural heritage. Every region is different but each has attractive towns and villages, and ancient architectural and historic treasures.
The south coast of France is on the Mediterranean Sea which was once the centre of the ancient world. The high Pyrenees form the border with Spain which can be crossed only at its two ends. The west coast faces the Atlantic Sea and the northern coast is on the English Channel (in French, La Manche). France's eastern border is with with Italy and Switzerland and runs along the Alps, with their magnificent scenery, snow-capped peaks and charming medieval towns, and that with Germany along the River Rhine.
Within these frontiers France is divided into a high central plateau, and the valleys, plains and basins of broad rivers. The Rhone River valley forms a wide corridor between the Alps and the central plateau and is the natural entrance from the Mediterranean.
Holidays in France can be in any region because the range of attractions, things to do and places to see is endless. For example, Annecy has one of the most beautiful settings in the French Alps where majestic mountains rise up from the clear waters and medieval buildings and castles add to the charm. Chamonix, at the foot of Mont Blanc, is a spectacular destination with clearly marked pathways giving access to the superb scenery. The Jura and Vosges Mountains offer additional fine alternatives to hikers, with quiet and remote valleys, or balloon flights above the Vosges.
The weather in France differs very much from one part of the country to another. In the north is is very much like that of England while on the south coast it rarely rains in the summer and is usually sunny in winter. This is probably why French people call this the 'sky-blue coast'.
