Sirmione is situated on a beautiful peninsula in the south of Lake Garda is the centre of tourism on the lake. It is almost an island and the centre is located at the very end of the 2km long peninsular that juts out from the southern shore of the lake. The approach to Sirmione is guarded by a magnificent 13th century Scaliger fort called the Rocca Scaligera where the moated keep is surrounded by massive walls and the formidable harbour fortifications. Visitors can climb the stairways to ascend the 47 metre high mastio for the breathtaking views over the town, the lake and the surrounding countryside. The outside of the Rocca Scaligera is best seen by boat and the trip can easily be taken from the pretty harbour in Sirmione.
